We’ve been looking forward to this for quite awhile, and the time has finally come. New Leaf Online is now offering Botox Cosmetic for treatment of forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet!
What is Botox, really?
Botox, otherwise known as onabotulinum toxin A, is made from a toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This bacteria can cause Botulism if eaten, but doctors can inject the toxin in tiny doses to treat facial wrinkles, among other uses.
How does it work?
In addition to the normal age-related loss of skin elasticity and fatty tissue, facial wrinkles are largely caused by the muscles of the face pulling on the skin, causing it to wrinkle up. Over time, the constant pulling of the muscles leaves creases in the skin that can stay visible even when the muscles aren’t pulling. Botox is injected into these facial muscles in a very precise pattern in order to temporarily paralyze muscles and stop them from pulling on the skin. Without the pulling of the muscles, the skin doesn’t wrinkle!
So it can cause paralysis?
Yes, that’s how it works, but your injector should be trained in how to apply the toxin in a very precise way that avoids paralyzing any of the muscles involved in normal facial expressions. This way, only the muscles that contribute to wrinkles are affected, and the rest of your facial muscles continue to function completely normally!
Is it permanent?
No, Botox treatments are not permanent. Typically, the results from your treatment will last about 3 months. If you stay consistent with your treatments, sometimes the effects begin to last longer, possibly even up to 4 months.
What can Botox Cosmetic treat?
Botox Cosmetic is FDA approved to treat forehead wrinkles, frown lines (also known as 11 lines or glabellar lines), and crow’s feet. There are some other common uses as well, but they have not been FDA approved. Those include treatment of bunny lines, gummy smile, and the eyebrow lift.
